SL travel guide offers virtual vacations
LANDMARK ISLAND: Many fascinating places have been created in Second Life over the years. The “Second Life In-World Travel Guide” gives new and established residents information on more than 200 of the best locations to visit.
Sean Percival (Sean Voss in SL) wrote this book to help both new and experienced residents. New residents spend their early time learning basic software tools. More established residents are involved in their lives, businesses and friends. any of the terrific builds in SL are missed.
This book groups the areas of travel locations into: shopping, entertainment, education, real life in SL, adults only and places to live. Each section features an overhead picture with speech bubbles pointing out key attractions. There is a small description of each location. Information about the creators and builders gives the reader a more in-depth knowledge about the area.
The “Second Life In-World Travel Guide” is available at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Second-World-Travel-Guide-World/dp/0789737302/
t will become available for purchase on December 28 and pre-orders are being taken.
Percival plans to host an in-world party close to the publication date of his book. “As part of the book promotion I’m going to do a small version of the book to give away.”
“I found that many residents have a large private ‘stash’ of great locations,” Percival said. “Many were happy to share with me some of their best finds. I had to dig up others myself. This book highlights some of the best locations.”
One chapter entitled “Virtual Boot Camp” leads the new SL resident through some of the basics. New users learn how to fly, teleport and find locations using the Search utility.
“The focus is mostly on large builds and private islands, as these have the most longevity (so the book doesn’t go out of date too quickly).” Percival has created both an island and Web site to help keep the location information fresh.
The free Web site http://www.landmarkisland.com/ features groupings of tours that have been run in-world. At press time the site lists five tours: The best of SL, Shopping in SL, Real life places in SL, CSI in SL and The world of Rezzable. Each of the recorded tours contains several locations to visit and descriptions of the area. The Web site is also a social network so others can share and chat.
Tours are live events run every Sunday evening at 7 pm SLT. They are sponsored by STA Travel, a real life travel agency that has a large presence in SL. Percival, as his avatar Sean Voss, leads the weekly tours to interesting places in SL. This past week members of the travel group sat in on a filming of “Tonight Live,” a SLCN.tv virtual version of a late night talk show. Receive notification of future tours by joining the group “Virtual Travel Hub.”
Landmark Island is set up with themed rooms. Here visitors can enter a specific room and see locations with descriptions to visit. Visit at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Landmark%20Island/135/126/35
“Remember those first few places that made you say ‘Wow!’ I want to help users keep that feeling,” Percival said.
