The Proposal

The night started at the River Café at 9:30, what a great place (and great food). Unfortunately I was so nervous I could barely eat most of my food (which is unfortunate because it was amazing and the bill came to $300). Now I know we have to be to the empire state building by 11:15 to catch the last elevator to the top. We had to depart dinner earlier and thanks to the helpful staff we had a town car waiting and ready for the trek across town. We only have 15 mins to get there so im getting worried. I took a page from my dad’s history book (he once offered a cab driver $50 to get him to the airport on time which resulted in the cabbie driving on sidewalks and other kamikaze maneuvers) and he made it, and so did we, huge tip to the driver and we are out. 11:14 now and in the lobby of the empire, I begin to run to make sure we get tickets in time, im knocking and bumping and pushing my way through tourists left and right. I’m also pretty sure I injured a nice german man, sorry Gunter no time to apologize!

We are the last few people to get to the top, the view is amazing but im nothing but im a ball of nerves at this point. We walk around for a few mins only to hear the guides say “Observatory closing in 5 mins, everyone make your way to the elevator). Great now the pressure is really on…..

A nice couple asks for us to take their picture, I say “Sure no problem, just return the favor for us”. After a few snaps I whisper to the lady “I’m about to propose, would you mind staying for a moment and take as many pictures as possible?” She has a confused but happy look upon her face.

I turn to my girl, and get down on one knee, people are starting to stare, some are clapping and cheering. I spit out what words I could and open the box. The box shines a light on the ring when open, later she told me she thought she was hallucinating upon seeing this. Everyone is cheering now, there were still lots of people up there yet we felt very alone amidst all the chaos. I placed the ring on her finger, followed with smooching and a few tears.

Thankfully, she did say yes ;)
