Introducing SMO, Stern Media Optimization

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

meface11Allen Stern of CenterNetworks has gone too far. Frustrated by getting buried on Digg and TechMeme, Allen is executing some new black hat technique called SMO, Stern Media Optimization.

He has already taken over my SERP and MG Siegler’s as well. Someone call the Cutlets please before this gets outa hand. I’m terrified that soon I’ll find the blogger king throughout my Google Alerts.

Ok really its the new Wordpress thumbnails within Google feature, Steve Rubel has a nice post covering the update.

SEO, PPC Management and SERM from Tsavo

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is no longer a dirty word, instead a very real part of any online strategy. Whether it’s general SEOReputation Management, or Pay Per Click, your search engine placement can dramatically determine your success or failure.

Since I get hit up just about daily with SEO questions (pleas for help), I’m happy to officially announce the launch of Tsavo Agency. The agency came to light after our acquisition of Los Angeles based Done! SEO. Now after integrating some of the Tsavo “special sauce”, they have relaunched and expanded their already killer service offerings.

If you need help getting better search engine indexing, or help monetizing your site, be sure to contact these guys. Just ask for Jeff and tell them Sean sent ya.

Thanks to Network World

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

I recently sat down with James E. Gaskin of Network World.

We talked mostly about how small businesses can leverage social media and search engine technologies. Of course there is so much to discuss here, however James managed to grab a few things key takeaways and include them in this nice piece.

Guy Kawasaki: “Everything I learned about SEO, I learned from Sean Percival”

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

A clip from the TechZulu interview with Guy Kawasaki. He learned so much in fact that he put me way too high on the Alltop SEO page. I’ve since asked him to move me over to the EGOS page, as you might agree, a much better place for this blog.

So what does Guy know about SEO?

Not much actually, in fact he was just giving me a soundbite courtesy of the TechZulu crew. For Alltop, good search engine placement was a bonus, not an objective. Guy does however understand one of the most important SEO tactics, creating quality content. Spread that across a network of over 200 niche topics and you’ll no doubt receive some great search placements. The term Moms is a good example of this.

What else helps Alltop on the SEO Side?

  • Refreshing Content: Google loves freshness, this is one reason why blogs and Wikipedia do so well. By aggregating so many high quality feeds the page is constantly updated with relevant content throughout the day.
  • Light Pages: All pages on Alltop are light and load quickly. This is also important to the Google bot who is no doubt slamming many of these subdomains. Finding nothing but refreshing content, the bot is going to want to increase its crawl rate and indexing.
  • Niche!: There is and always will be great traffic in niche topics. Dominating several niche topics is going to be a big win for Alltop. As the online communities and blogs for each of these topics discovers the subdomains, they will no doubt link in.

What else is cool?

Alltop just launched a nice redesign and is now tracking 213 topics. Guy launches these start ups on the cheap and has fun while doing it. That’s always been a big goal with anything I do online. I showed him my TechCrunch50 aggregator and he enjoyed it. He even said that “when I grow up I can aggregate for Alltop”.

Tempting Guy, but instead I’ll build my own. :)

Яндекс (Yandex)

Monday, August 25th, 2008

I’m learning more about the Russian search engine Яндекс through this great piece in the Times Online. It seems much like Chinese Baidu, Google is starting to lose its domination here as well. I love to hear about stories like this because

1) competition in search is good

and

2) new regional based search equals new opportunities

Recently I’ve started to experiment with Chinese SEO for Docstoc, visitors from the region have already increased by around 1000% compared to the month prior.  I can’t help but think there are some really big missed opportunities for content sites and regional search engine optimization. While everyone in the business likes to say international visitors don’t monetize, traffic (and most importantly traffic growth) can determ the true value of your startup.
