Animal Crossing City Folk

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

My wife is so crazy addicted to the first Animal Crossing game for Nintendo Gamecube. Even years later she STILL plays the damn thing. Needless to say, she is pretty excited about the sequel Animal Crossing City Folk.

Here are some screen shots from this upcoming release:

Spore Test Drive

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Finally got a chance to play around with Spore tonight. Someone I know used to joke saying, “Spore is going to be an awesome game, when it launches in 2012″. Sometimes it even felt like this was the truth. Luckily for us this is not the case and we are a little closer with the Spore Creature Creator. While this is only the first piece of the massive simulator, it gives us a great feel for what the expect.

I created the below creature appropriately named “Heady”. Check him out followed by some of my initial feedback.

  • Insanely intuitive: A common problem with 3D content creation is simply getting started. With Spore the entry bar is very low, the whole process smooth and easy. There is just enough “auto-snap” without losing any freedom for creativity.
  • Machinima: Capturing video content is incredibility easy. The software has a simple and great incorporation of YouTube. Capture your video and send it right up to YouTube, all from within the app.
  • A Wii Moment: Watch someone use a Nintendo Wii for the first time, this is the Wii moment. It’s the very real smile someone gets from a virtual experience. Using Spore yields several of these moments as you tweak and customize your character. The music and sound effect composition will easily have you grinning back at your monitor.
  • Social Spore: There is a profile based community piece to the game as well. It’s a little scarce now, hopefully it’s due for expansion in the future. Virtual Worlds and MMOs have a poor history of integration between web and the medium itself. Let’s hope they come up with something innovative here as well.

    Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

For those who have been watching the Mahalo Vlog Idol contest we are now down to our final 6! For those who have been wondering “how long are they going to string this along” the answer is not much longer! Jason is asking folks to create some blogs posts and rank your favorites. We are also looking for any feedback to help make the final decision. Since I work at Mahalo I’ll refrain from listing my favorites **cough** SARAH ATWOOD **cough** and embed the 6 videos below in order of appearance.

Who is your favorite? Please blog about it or leave a comment on the Mahalo Daily website. I added the Seesmic video comment earlier this week there so you can record your feedback as well.

Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA4) Videos, Walk Throughs and Unboxing

    Sunday, April 27th, 2008

One of the more anticipated games of this year decade, Grand Theft Auto 4 is getting released on Tuesday. At Mahalo we plan to pickup the game at midnight Monday night and immediately tear into it. One fun thing about being at a place like Mahalo is Jason pretty much gives us free will to experiment with new ideas for the content. Back when Super Smash Bros was released I came up with the idea to setup a Ustream Channel and stream some live game play. This turned out to be a huge success, we saw waves of people come into the chat and participating with the content. Feeding links into the chat with an RSS to IRC script also proved to be a very valuable way from driving qualified traffic to Mahalo.

So naturally we plan to do the same this time around, check out the GTA4 Live Stream page or the below embeds on April 29, 2008 (12 AM - 8 AM).

While we all wait to get our hands on this delicous carnage take a look at some of the current pages from the Grand Theft Auto 4 Category:

I have a few friends who are chomping at the bit for Super Smash Bros Brawl to be released. Now it seems that time has come! The video game team over at Mahalo is getting a copy at midnight and playing throughout the night. They are going to record some of the game play and upload the videos. Workoholics? Not a chance, these guys would be doing this at home anyway! :D Instead they can create some great pages for thousands of other happy gamers to enjoy. Check out the Super Smash Bros Brawl category for all the related content.

    Rock Band

    Monday, November 26th, 2007

I must say…. I *LOVE* Rock Band! This game is really great, in fact I almost understand all the commotion over Guitar Hero after playing this a few times. Calling this now as the biggest and hard to find present this Christmas. I was lucky enough to pickup two this weekend, one for Mahalo and another as an investment. I did the same thing on the Wii and doubled my money thanks to desperate eBay shoppers. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few weeks this item takes double or triple the retail price in auction. At around $200 for the special edition (the one that includes all the instruments) the price point is setup too high for many, but for fanatical users just right. Rumor has it not enough units were made (due to rush by MTV) and this is already clear by the many sold out signs on web sites and local shops.

Game play is intuitive and normally hilarious with the right group of people. Avatar customization includes a nice selection of templates and a unique design tool for creating your tattoo layouts. The current version does not support Xbox Live! "Battle of the Bands" mode but this is scheduled in a future update. Despite the solid feeling of this new guitar many are finding themselves with broken guitars after only a few days use. EA has already setup a process to easily replace yours should you be unlucky enough to receive a dud.

In game (and even out of game) advertising is through the roof on this one. The guitar and drums each adorn logos from real world instrument companies like Fender and Ludwig. So yes, congrats to MTV for a new cash cow and huge hit. I don’t think even Tickle Me Elmo is going to be laughing this hard to the bank….
