Happy Cheating!

Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA4) Videos, Walk Throughs and Unboxing

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

One of the more anticipated games of this year decade, Grand Theft Auto 4 is getting released on Tuesday. At Mahalo we plan to pickup the game at midnight Monday night and immediately tear into it. One fun thing about being at a place like Mahalo is Jason pretty much gives us free will to experiment with new ideas for the content. Back when Super Smash Bros was released I came up with the idea to setup a Ustream Channel and stream some live game play. This turned out to be a huge success, we saw waves of people come into the chat and participating with the content. Feeding links into the chat with an RSS to IRC script also proved to be a very valuable way from driving qualified traffic to Mahalo.

So naturally we plan to do the same this time around, check out the GTA4 Live Stream page or the below embeds on April 29, 2008 (12 AM - 8 AM).

While we all wait to get our hands on this delicous carnage take a look at some of the current pages from the Grand Theft Auto 4 Category:

Mahalo Adds Microformats

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

At Mahalo we just rolled out rolled out Microformats for relevant search result pages. So what does this mean, and what are Microformats? Well, they are data classes that help machines and people identify and export information. Data such as contacts and address information is much easier to manage, search engines can also better catalog the info. Yes a little bit of the semantic web of tomorrow….today!

Getting Started:

1. Firefox users can download the Operator plugin to get instant Microformats support.

2. Visit the Paris Hotels page on Mahalo

3. Notice the Operator plugin in the top left of the below image. Every hotel featured on the page is now available for quick and easy export. You also get a few other nice features like quick access to mapping websites. Get the data you need and drop it into your address book and phone with a few clicks.

So obviously this type of feature can only apply to certain types of information. However for data it can be used with there is a lot of potential. Microformats has yet to see it’s “tipping point” like RSS but Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer 9 have been rumored to be including native support. Now we need to really figure out what other types of data to map and how to make it even easier for our users. More info to “follow” on this soon. :)

Special thanks to Tantek who took the time to come by the Mahalo HQ and share Microformats with the staff.

My Picks for the Next Host of Mahalo Daily

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

The Mahalo Vlog Idol contest kicked off today at Mahalo HQ, sadly I wasn’t able to attend due to this death flu I came down with recently. Thanks however to the wonderful power of the internets, I was able to watch most of it online via our UStream channel. Looks like there was a great turnout and some really strong contestants. After watching the auditions, and getting to know a little bit more about some of them I’m going to pony up and endorse my favorites.

Lisa Brewster
http://www.sophistechate.com/

Lisa for one is smart as shit and just an overall interesting girl. Into photography, technology and whole mess of other various interests. She has basically zero experience podcasting/vloging but is a natural in front of the camera. When we talked about our next host internally we kept coming back to getting an unknown talent and helping her develop. I can’t help but think Lisa fits this bill perfectly. Oh and she beyond nailed it by researching the topic ahead of time, I don’t think any other contestant even thought of this! Of course using Mahalo’s Pinkberry page was a nice touch :).

Sarah Atwood
http://sarahatwood.wordpress.com/

I actually first heard about Sarah through Valleywag of all places. After some digging around its clear Sarah has a lot of geek cred. She has a lot of experience with video/lifecasting and has even done her own streaming of the process via seesmic. Has great hair and just seems like she would be really enjoyable and easy to work with.

Best of luck to everyone who made it to round two! Sunday they are taking the contestants to the 3rd St Promonade in Santa Monica for some “man on the street” interviews. Stay tuned to Mahalo Daily, the team is going to be showing clips from the contest through out the week.

*Update:

LAist has a nice video with 3 of the top contestants including my two picks! Bonny is great as well.

TechCrunch50 vs DEMO Fall

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

The TechCrunch50 conference was announced over on TechCrunch today. Similar to last year’s TechCrunch40 conference a group of hopeful and doe eyed startups get a shot to demo their product to an influential crowd. The winner will also get $50,000 to add to their startup treasure chest. Not bad!

Now the fun part, it seems the conference was scheduled during the same time as the long standing DEMO conference (of a similar format). This puts the two head to head for attendees and sponsorship revenue, Arrington even goes on to say “DEMO needs to die“. Mike and Jason offer a cheap (free, actually) application fee while DEMO opts for the “hope there is room on the credit card” approach. Naturally both charge a huge attendee fee (2k for TC50 and 3K for DEMO) but in the conference world its all about making cash, and truck loads of it. In a prior life I used to do technical logistics for a few large conferences, in most cases one event supported an organization for an entire year.

Best of luck to the startups out there, 50 large will buy a lot of pizza to complete your work.

Update:
Someone Should Explain the Rules of Highlander - What a Title! Mike you do seem to be on more of domination tour than usual. Can I interview you at TC50?

Reality Crunch - Just finding this as well, I don’t remember but apparently this is from last year. Totally creepy. They are twittersquating the TC50 twitter name already!
