A Few Words with Neil Patel

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Tonight we had a Docstoc dinner at Benihana’s with special guest Neil Patel. You may remember him from such Internet memes as “The Jason Calacanis SEO Challenge“. Neil has had some interesting experiences in his short but successful career. Unfortunately for you, we talked about most of the juicy stuff off camera. I did however manage to ask him a few questions in the valet line. Enjoy.

Introducing B

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

At Docstoc we have a few interns, they do all kinds of dirty work for us with minimal complaining. When they aren’t doing one their many tasks, they have to deal with me jamming a camera in their face. In this episode we meet one them, B.

I was pretty excited to find someone who could actually watch, and even enjoy The Hills TV show. So I asked her a few questions to help understand the allure. Enjoy.

Gotta love the speed of the Internet (and general greed of Americans). Someone has already made a Brett Favre Jets Jersey and started selling it through their website.

Share and Monitor Your Private Documents

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

As Allen just posted over at CenterNetworks, today we launched some new features here at Docstoc. These new private document features allow you to easily store and share your private documents.

Here is a breakdown of some of the key features:

  • Emailing Large Documents: Instead of trying to cram huge files through your email provider, upload them to Docstoc and easily share them.
  • Document Activity Log: For any private documents you share, easily track who views, downloads and emails your documents.
  • Document Guest book: Anyone you share your private document link with signs a document guest book upon visit. Great way to track if your file actually made it or was even viewed by the recipient.
  • Ultimate Document Protection: Want to share a Word or PowerPoint file without giving away the actual source file? Upload your document and mark it copy write, now your document can be viewed but not downloaded.

Watch as Jason takes us through an example of how startups can use this feature:

China, The Internet, and That Pesky Great Wall

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

I’ve been doing some research on Chinese Internet usage and even Chinese SEO. At Docstoc we offer content in a variety of languages (some 50+). As you can probably imagine, our English content makes up the bulk of our traffic today. However I think now is the time for content sites to focus on their foreign language content as well.

Starting with China, let’s take a quick look at some of the challenges and trends developing over there.

A Billion Bikes on The Highway

Source: China Internet Network Information Center

It’s not surprising that China recently surpassed the United States in terms of Internet Users. Given their huge population and shifting classes, more and more residents are coming online. Imagine how high this will be in 5 years.

Google Is Not Your Master There

Search Engines are the main traffic driver for any good content site. So it’s interesting to learn that Google does not dominate the search market in China. Instead its Baidu, a Google like experience that has been tailored for the region. For me this raises all types of questions, some about basic SEO tactics and of course the censorship issue.

Attack of the Clones

Sure they have Web 2.0 in China, hell they already cloned many of your favorite sites. Every great idea Silicon Valley creates gets reborn here with a Chinese twist. For example, their LinkedIn is less about six figure blue shirts and more about networking through events and online photos. Having a good (and appropriate) presence on these sites is going to be important.

If anyone has any experiance with China online I’d like to hear about it in the comments or my mailbox.

Let Me Give You Money

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Actually let my work, here is what we need:

  • Content Manager (another me): Someone familiar with large content based sites, we have 500,000 documents and need to get to 10 million. Experience in the areas of vertical based content with heavy SEO goodness a must. The ability to reach out and setup content partnerships with large websites/businesses. This is a full time job, soon to be located in Santa Monica, CA. If you refer someone who works out after 3 months I’ll give you $500.
  • Wordpress Plugin Developer: We need to create an plugin very similar to easytube. In addition to easing the embed process, it needs to pull and select content directly from our site as well. This is a one time contract gig. Our site is ASP.net btw, strange I know. :)

Email seanp at docstoc.com for more info/resumes.
