Gizmodo has just revealed that the unlucky chap who lost his iPhone prototype is Gray Powell. Turns out Gray also has a MySpace page in addition to the Facebook page mentioned in the article.
The MySpace page certainly has some interesting things to note. For one he’s rocking a Microsoft Zune theme, but lets delve a little deeper…
First lets check out that “About Me”:
Just moved out to San Francisco from Raleigh, NC. Got a job at apple, and it keeps me busy enough during the week. enjoy huge club parties as well as jazz trios in coffee bars. I enjoy mighty leaf tea and super hoppy IPA’s.. I’m a gadget whore I’ve been trying to make use of all the bike lanes out here. love to travel I can make you laugh I take pictures I hate the rain.. well ok it’s growing on me out here in the bay, but I’ll take sun anyday!! Into any live music, drum and bass, dubstep, earthy hip hop, electroglitch, funk, soul, vinyl, photography, tech culture, apple, and anything else I can see, hear, smell, or touch.. and I love it out here in the bay!!!
Sounds like the right guy, now what about that “Who I’d Like to Meet” section:
Steve Jobs, busta rhymes
Hmmm, do you think he has met Steve yet?

@Will Ya his background is the Microsoft Zune? Maybe to be ironic?

I think now he’ll meet Steve Jobs alright. Exit interview style. That was one Doppelbock too many for Mr. Powell.

Gray is a close friend of mine, a great engineer, and a passionate Apple employee. The photo you’ve charmingly lifted from his MySpace page shows what a fun-loving and cool person he is.
Working at Apple has always been his dream, and it would be a tremendous loss for both parties if he can’t continue to work on what he’s so passionate about.
Everyone makes mistakes. Give the guy a break.

@George
Well it’s a very big story so you can’t expect people to not talk and blog it.
However I would agree, he does look like fun-loving guy with a great passion for the work. I’m sure most wouldn’t want to see him lose his job over this. Wishing him the best possible outcome on this.

I’m sure he’s a lovely guy, but this is a colossal mistake. Unpardonable.
Anyone who works in product development (I do) knows the importance of intellectual property security. You just don’t do stuff like this.
He should consider himself lucky if he only gets fired and not sued.

@Sean –
Sure, its a compelling story, and people are going to blog about it. I get that.
However, your post is merely a character assassination, and adds nothing to the discourse.

And what kind of person steals/takes/keeps something that obviously doesn’t belong to them?!
Certainly nobody I would ever want in my social circle or in my house. That’s shady. Bad Karma.

This is totally a horrid bash against a person who made a little mistake. Its not like he did anything illegal or hurt anybody. He lost a f’n phone. What is the world coming to.
April 20th, 2010 at 5:23 am
If Apple were so worried about hardware getting out, they wouldn’t have let a 27 year old junior or mid-level programmer run around town with something like that.
Did they want it to get out?
April 20th, 2010 at 5:23 am
I feel so sorry for this guy. I hope for his sake that the internet forgets his name after the dust settles and apple releases the phone. He’s probably a brilliant dude who just had one too many. Been there. Go ahead and throw the first stone if you haven’t.

i found this post clicking around mr. powell’s name and just wanted to say nice hair asshole.
April 20th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
George, the reason people talk about this isn’t because a hapless 27 year old code monkey left a prototype device lying around somewhere, it’s because Apple is so ridiculously controlling and secretive. And for what? Hardware that’s little more than a bulky and enormously overpriced Nokia X6? A device that is at best a Nexus One clone? And it’s not like Apple has pulled marketing stunts deliberately before and leaked devices info themselves.
Unless heads roll at Apple and Apple sues Gizmodo and wins, the only logical conclusion is that the whole thing was a marketing setup by Apple. Shame on your company.

“However, your post is merely a character assassination, and adds nothing to the discourse.”
By the way, how is quoting his public profile “character assassination”?

The thing is other men have committed suicide over this mistake. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10292929-37.html
Brutal!

YES, Forget Steve. BUSTA RHYMES!!! I like this guy.

I feel bad for the guy… We made shirts to show our support – http://cafepress.com/neckbeard if anyone knows Gray’s contact info we’d love to send him one!

this could be a promotional strategy..to make people look forward for the next ipod

This is the height of irresponsibility.
Who takes a prototype of the company’s new product (be it the iphone or the new GM car) to a bar?
Logic states that there are way too many chances to lose the product in such environment as a pub where you are focused on beer and girls.

Wow, this can be a nice blog which offer numerous information about music. I like music and this weblog helps me lot. Thanks to your worth information. I am very respect it.

It is Gray Powell’s fault. Who takes proprietary company hardware offsite when the hardware is a prototype that is supposed to be locked up? Who uses said software for personal use? That is not a mistake! That is a seriously show of irresponsibility! I know my company would be PISSED if I took one of their devices out for a joy ride and lost it!
He should be fired as I would be if I pulled a stunt like that.
