He should have been more careful. He’s wearing a Bulova watch which is one of his sponsors, and it is an illegal substance. It’s like eating cheeseburgers. If you can do it and still win, then where is the harm. YES, he should be more aware of his surroundings, if your gonna take a bong hit, and have million dollar endorsements, do it in a locked room and make sure your buddies don’t snap any pictures.
It is illegal which is why he should have been more careful. But alcohol is much worse for you, look at all the tests, don’t go by what our government tells us what is wrong and what is right or whats legal and not legal.

I personally have no problem with this action… but i understand why some people might. But who is to say smoking marijuana is wrong? the government says it is perfectly fine to go out and get completely belligerent as long as you are just drinking alcohol. it makes no sense. drinking is waaaaaay more dangerous than smoking marijuana. You never hear about someone getting so stoned that they go around picking fights because they have some new found confidence also known as “beer muscles.” Another thing is that there are way more accidents related to alcohol rather than marijuana. it seems to me that the government really hasn’t thought this through. And for people like Karen and Daria to say it is soooooooooo wrong because it is “illegal” really makes me sick because they just fall in line with what they are told and dont have any real opinions themselves!!! and also Karen really needs to check her grammar because i could hardly understand that message!

Personally I think whoever took this picture is an asswhole for doing this to Michael Phelps, but in the end I believe this is more motivational to our youth. This image of him smoking pot might seem offensive to many people because it has been socially implemented into our society that it is wrong, but marijuana has almost been legalized by the Congress many times, and much of our world has enganged in the use of Marijuana already. This image of him smoking pot is a motivation to our world, because it is the representation that if Michael Phelps can smoke pot and still win 8 gold medals, maybe the mistakes I have made in my past won’t affect me achieving my dream aswell. This mistake he has made, can be good or bad depending on how we percieve it. It is a motivation to the average people, to know that they dont have to be perfect bred champions that have never falted to the sins of our world in order to achieve what they really want. Don’t be as ignorant as to so quickly judge his actions wrong, when they have the chance to motivate so many.

This is a great example of how people can lead normal, albeit successful, lives while still smoking marijuana. I agree marijuana can be damaging for people who smoke it habitually and allow its demotivational effects to mess up their lives. But for people like myself and I assume Michael, smoking weed every once in a while on special occassions, like let’s say a house party, does absolutely no harm whatsoever. Tell you something….marijuana has been PROVEN to assist in medical patients. My mother has stage 4 cancer, as well as many people I met at her center. It is NOT a horrible drug people!!! Get with it and realize it helps many people heal and at least be free of pain. YES it is against regulations for ANY athlete, because it is still illegal. He should def be in trouble for the simple fact of knowing the rules to his swimming career. But for god sakes…..stop knocking the drug saying its bad!!! As stupid as you all may think he is, I think alot of people need to remember that he is human. His space and privacy was violated. He was obviously in a place with people he trusted. He isn’t training right now, he is living his life and celebrating that he is one of the best athletes of all times. Its not like he was caught doing something that will kill you. I come from a small area and it is much easier for me to count the people who havent smoked pot than those who have, and from the sounds of other replies its like that everywhere. And marijuana does not destroy people, you’re talking about it like it’s cocaine, heroin, or some type of really hard-core drug. Now, I may be a college student, and some people may think it’s just my “young, easily influenced mind” saying this – but marijuana isn’t dangerous. You can’t overdose on it – like you CAN with every other drug. It’s not nearly as addictive as, oh, say… cigarettes, and those hard-core drugs I mentioned. And it isn’t chemically enhanced (well, some types are, but most intelligent people stay away from stuff like that.)
