I also picture a fail whale making a sad kind of eyeore/ debbie downer type of exhale that says "faaaiill whaaallleee) with a downward intonation on "whale." I like the timbre of the voice, it should be soft and deep. But I think although the whale is peace-loving (as seen by his shy smile) he is also playful as can be seen by his companionship with extraordinarily strong birds who raise him up out of the ocean depths to misadventures in the sky.
