TechCrunch50 vs DEMO Fall
April 3rd, 2008By: Sean Percival
The TechCrunch50 conference was announced over on TechCrunch today. Similar to last year’s TechCrunch40 conference a group of hopeful and doe eyed startups get a shot to demo their product to an influential crowd. The winner will also get $50,000 to add to their startup treasure chest. Not bad!
Now the fun part, it seems the conference was scheduled during the same time as the long standing DEMO conference (of a similar format). This puts the two head to head for attendees and sponsorship revenue, Arrington even goes on to say “DEMO needs to die“. Mike and Jason offer a cheap (free, actually) application fee while DEMO opts for the “hope there is room on the credit card” approach. Naturally both charge a huge attendee fee (2k for TC50 and 3K for DEMO) but in the conference world its all about making cash, and truck loads of it. In a prior life I used to do technical logistics for a few large conferences, in most cases one event supported an organization for an entire year.
Best of luck to the startups out there, 50 large will buy a lot of pizza to complete your work.
Update:
Someone Should Explain the Rules of Highlander - What a Title! Mike you do seem to be on more of domination tour than usual. Can I interview you at TC50?
Reality Crunch - Just finding this as well, I don’t remember but apparently this is from last year. Totally creepy. They are twittersquating the TC50 twitter name already!
